NFL through the eyes of Vegas

As I said in my column today, sometimes it’s fun to look at the Las Vegas futures odds for the NFL season. It reveals what they, the people who care most, think about all the teams including your favorite team. Here are the odds according to Mandalay Bay as of Aug. 5.

4-1: 49ers

6-1: Patriots, Packers

7-1: Broncos

8-1: Eagles, Bears

10-1: Cowboys

12-1: Lions, Steelers, Jets

15-1: Saints, Texans

18-1: Giants, Ravens

22-1: Falcons

25-1: Chargers, Seahawks, Raiders, Redskins

30-1: Bengals, Bills, Dolphins

40-1: Chiefs, Rams

50-1: Panthers

60-1: Buccaneers

80-1: Titans, Cardinals, Browns

100-1: Vikings

150-1: Colts, Jaguars

If I was going to bet on any of these, I think the best value comes from the Ravens, Giants and Chargers. Teams I think are rated too high are the Broncos, Eagles and Dolphins.

Another cool Vegas list is the projected number of wins for each team. They predict a number and you bet whether the team will win more or fewer regular season games. Here is that list:

12 wins: Packers, Patriots

10.5: Eagles, Texans, Steelers

10: Ravens, 49ers

9.5: Falcons, Saints, Giants, Lions, Chargers, Bears

9: Broncos

8.5: Cowboys, Jets

8: Bengals, Titans, Chiefs, Bills

7.5: Seahawks, Panthers

7: Dolphins, Cardinals, Raiders

6.5: Redskins

6: Buccaneers, Rams, Vikings

5.5: Browns, Jaguars

5: Colts

These are all so spot on, but some bets I would make: Patriots over 12, Dolphins under 7, Falcons under 9.5 and Raiders over 7.

Anyway I’m not encouraging betting, but these odds lists create useful talking points.

I want to hear from you. Which teams does Vegas have wrong? What bets would you make? Please leave a comment.
