Davis Cup vs. Olympics
Posted: December 4th, 2011 | Author: Leighton Ginn | Filed under: Sports Blog, Tennis | Tags: Davis Cup, Olympics, Rafael Nadal, Spain, Tennis, WimbledonAs many of you will know right now, Spain won’t have its best team available to defend it’s Davis Cup title won Sunday. Rafael Nadal said he will take a pass on Davis Cup play to focus on the Olympics.
I know Davis Cup has been around much longer than tennis in the Olympics, but an Olympic medal still means more. Davis Cup is a mess and hardly ever gets the best player competing regularly because of a crazy schedule that’s hard to keep track of. Organizers of the Davis Cup refuse to make changes to the schedule and format. Each year they stick their head in the sand, the Davis Cup becomes more and more insignificant.
The 2012 Olympics promises to be a special one, with the tournament on the grounds of Wimbledon, which could be a once-in-a-lifetime event.
Don’t expect Nadal to be the only player to pass on the Davis Cup. Spain has a deep and talented roster of players, but all of those players are capable of medaling at the Olympics. Why wouldn’t they pass on the Davis Cup to improve their chances?
But lets hope this will help lead to some reform with the Davis Cup.
